제우스는 펠레우스와 테티스의 결혼식에 모든 신들을 초대했으나, 불화의 여신 에리스를 초대하지 않았다.
이에 분노한 에리스는 초대받지 않고 잔치에 나타나, 한 개의 황금사과를 연회장 한가운데로 던졌다.
그 사과에는 "가장 아름다운 이에게"라고 적혀 있었다.
When Zeus invited all the gods to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, he left out Eris, the goddess of discord.
Angered by this, Eris came to the banquet uninvited and threw a golden apple into the midst of the guests.
Upon the apple were written the words "To the fairest."
